Travel Photography
Photography is an art form that has always interested me. Despite never having invested in a professional-grade camera, I have enjoyed taking photographs of scenery and situations that capture my interest ever since receiving my first mobile phone. With today’s incredible technological advances providing the means to take excellent high-resolution photographs on our hand-held devices, everyone and anyone can be a photographer.
Why Take Travel Photographs?
Part of the beauty of travel is that we are literally escaping our everyday lives. Taking a well-earned break from the often monotonous and mundane daily routines of our domestic existence is not only a cause for celebration but a cause for creating memories, ones that last forever. Memories that we can call upon during those disheartening moments of monotony, with which we can transport ourselves back to those exciting and invigorating experiences.
What better way to do this than with actual snapshots of wonderful moments in time, where the colours of scenery pop out from the page or screen, bringing us back to those moments of adventure and excitement.
Photographs offer lasting memories, keeping the sights and scenes of specific locations and incidences perfectly intact, even as our own fragile memories dwindle. Browsing your own travel photographs years after their inception is a unique experience that can remind you of who you were and what you felt in those moments. They are like diary entries that speak a thousand words, giving clarity and precise detail to exact situations of adventure and life experience.
Point, aim, shoot!
Taking photographs is simple in principle and as complex as you want it to be in practice. If you are fortunate enough to have one of the latest Smartphones at your disposal, then you already have everything you need to take high-quality images and the facility to store them, edit them and upload them. Your phone’s camera likely has anything between 12 and 48 megapixel capabilities, which can bring about some impressive results, particularly if you know how to get the best out of your particular device’s settings. Knowing when to shoot in portrait or landscape, applying filters and utilising camera modes such as panoramic or time-lapse, can all enhance the quality of your results. I recommend getting to know your device’s capabilities and controls in order to get the best out of your photography experience.

Subject Matter
For me, travelling is about exploring locations and destinations that intrigue and excite, which is why I love to capture the moments that I spend in places I don’t get to experience every day. This not only includes scenery and surroundings but also food and drink - particularly when they are local cuisine that offers an authentic experience of the setting. I take photos of food because it excites me and brings me joy to remember what wonderful dishes I have had the pleasure of experiencing in such amazing locations around the world. Perhaps my favourite subject matter however, is the scenery in these locations, particularly in landscape form where the surroundings and atmosphere are jumping through the screen at me. From buzzing, crowded plazas of cities to the peacefully picturesque terrain of nature, beauty can be found in a variety of surroundings.

Editing the photos you take can make the difference between a good photo and one that evokes and inspires. Personally, I enjoy enhancing the colours of scenery just enough to make the image pop and grab the attention of the viewer, without distorting the true beauty and realism of the capture. This could be a subtle boost in saturating allowing the greens of nature to burst into life that bit more, or the inclusion of shadow to add depth to a moody landscape. There are no solid rules as far as I’m concerned, as with all art-forms, subjectivity is the name of the game.
Everlasting Memories
These photographs not only serve as individual reminders of wonderful experiences, but can also provide excellent gifts for others. I often create photo-books filled with images of trips that I’ve taken with my father, sending them to him as memorable birthday or Christmas presents. He often tells me how much enjoyment he gets from browsing through these images, moments where he had been experiencing absolute adventure and the exploration of new and exciting places. This is the same enjoyment I get from browsing my own photographs and I hope others can experience this enjoyment with the photographs I have included throughout this website. I look forward to taking many, many more.
